ABL – Setting Up an Internet Connection via LAN/Ethernet

Written by Franjo Pranjić

This guide describes how to set up an internet connection via LAN/Ethernet on ABL eMH2 and ABL eMH3 charging stations.

Note: This guide applies exclusively to the ABL eMH2 and ABL eMH3 product range.

Prerequisites

The following materials and access rights must be available before starting the setup:

  • Admin access to the local network router

  • Laptop with an Ethernet port

  • Ethernet cable (RJ45)

  • SBC with up-to-date firmware

Tip: A guide on how to update the SBC firmware is available here: ABL – Performing a Firmware Update.

Setting Up the LAN Connection

Step 1: Remove the LTE Stick

Disconnect the LTE stick from the USB port on the enclosure door. A connected LTE stick prevents the charging station from establishing a LAN connection.

Note: As long as the LTE stick is connected, a stable LAN connection cannot be established. Remove it before proceeding with the configuration.

Step 2: Open the Web Interface

Open the local SBC web interface of the controller charging station. A step-by-step guide is available here: ABL – Accessing the SBC Web Administration Interface.

Step 3: Check the OCPP Connection

Verify that the OCPP server connection is correctly configured. Navigate to: Connectivity -> OCPP

The following values must be entered:

  • OCPP version: 1.6

  • URL: abl.reev.com

Step 4: Configure the IP Address

Navigate to the following menu item: Connectivity -> LAN

Here you can choose whether the charging station should obtain its IP address automatically via a local DHCP server, or whether you want to assign it manually.

Option A – DHCP (automatic): Leave the DHCP checkbox enabled. The IP address will be assigned automatically by the router.

Option B – Manual IP assignment: Uncheck the DHCP checkbox and save the setting. The input fields for manual configuration will then appear. Enter the required network details and save again.

Tip: The required network details (IP address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS) can be obtained from your IT administrator or directly from your router settings.

Step 5: Delete the Mobile Access Point

Navigate to the following menu item: Connectivity -> Mobile

Delete all entries for the mobile access point (APN), if any are present. Save the setting afterwards.

Note: If APN data remains entered, the charging station may continue attempting to establish a mobile connection, which can interfere with the LAN connection.

Step 6: Perform a Hard Reset

Navigate to the following menu item: Maintenance -> System

In the System Restart section, click the Hard Reset button. The charging station will automatically restart with the new settings.

Step 7: Reconnect the Ethernet Cable

Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your laptop and connect it to your router.

Note: Your router's security settings must allow communication between the charging station and the OCPP backend. The backend connection uses port 443. The charging station must also be able to perform DNS name resolution. If strict firewall settings are in place, contact your IT administrator.

Step 8: Verify the Connection

Finally, check the connectivity in the web interface under: Overview -> Monitoring

You can now access the administration interface via the IP address assigned to the controller charging station within your network.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Possible Cause

Solution

Web interface not reachable after reset

IP address has changed

Identify the new IP address via the router and reconnect

No backend connection despite LAN

LTE stick still connected

Remove the LTE stick and repeat the Hard Reset

No backend connection despite LAN

APN data still entered

Clear the APN fields under Connectivity* -> *Mobile and save

No backend connection despite LAN

Firewall blocking port 443

Contact your IT administrator to release port 443

DHCP not assigning an IP address

DHCP disabled on the router

Enable DHCP on the router or assign the IP address manually

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use LAN and LTE at the same time?

No. The LTE stick must be removed before setting up the LAN connection, as it prevents the LAN connection from being established.

Which port does the backend connection use?

The connection to the OCPP backend runs via port 443. Make sure this port is open in your firewall.

What if I do not want to assign a fixed IP address?

You can leave DHCP enabled. The IP address will then be assigned automatically by the router. Note that the IP address may change if the router is restarted.

How do I find the new IP address of the charging station after the reset?

The currently assigned IP address can be found in the device list of your router or by using a network scanning tool.

Do I need to perform a Hard Reset after every configuration change?

Yes. A Hard Reset is required after configuration to ensure all network settings are applied correctly.
