This article describes how to restart a charging station and what steps to follow in the process.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites should be observed before restarting:

  • You have access to the main switch or circuit breaker of the charging station.

  • You have access to the manufacturer's installation manual.

  • You are a qualified electrician or have been authorised by the operator.

Note: The exact procedure may vary depending on the manufacturer and model – e.g. for ABL, Mennekes, KEBA, Hager, Alfen, Schneider, or ABB. If this description does not match your charging station, check the manufacturer's installation manual or contact the manufacturer directly.

Restarting a Charging Station

The following steps describe the general process for restarting a charging station.

Step 1: End the Charging Session

If a vehicle is connected to the charging station, proceed as follows:

  1. Stop the charging session via the vehicle or directly at the charging station.

  2. Unplug the cable.

Tip: An active charging session should always be ended before restarting to avoid data loss or errors in the charging session log.

Step 2: Perform a Soft Reset (if available)

Some charging stations allow a restart to be triggered directly via the user interface. Proceed as follows:

  1. Access the menu via the display, control buttons, or the charging station app.

  2. Select the menu item "Restart" or "Reset".

  3. Wait until the station has fully restarted and is displaying normal operating status again.

Tip: A soft reset is the gentler method. Use it as the preferred option when supported by the charging station.

Step 3: Perform a Hard Reset (Power Off and On)

If a soft reset is not available or does not resolve the issue, restart the charging station via the power supply:

  1. Switch off the power supply of the charging station using the main switch or the associated circuit breaker.

  2. Wait at least 30 seconds.

  3. Switch the power supply back on.

  4. Wait until the charging station has fully booted up.

Note: Only switch off the power supply when you are certain that no active charging session is running. Otherwise, incorrect entries may appear in the charging session log.

Step 4: Check Functionality

After the restart, check the following:

  1. Verify that the charging station is displaying normal operating status again.

  2. Check in the reev Platform whether the station is shown as online again.

  3. If possible, start a test charging session to confirm that the station is working correctly.

Troubleshooting

If the charging station remains offline or does not function correctly after the restart, the following causes may apply:

  • Software-based lock: The charging station has been locked for security reasons. Check the status of the station in the reev Platform under Monitoring -> Charging Infrastructure -> Charge Points.

  • Weak mobile network connection: For SIM card-based stations, poor network coverage may prevent the connection. Check the signal status of the SIM card.

  • Hardware fault: If a technical defect is present, an on-site inspection by a qualified electrician is required.

Note: If you are unsure how to perform the restart correctly, or the station still does not function afterwards, contact the manufacturer or reach out to reev Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often can I restart a charging station?

An occasional restart is harmless. If the station needs to be restarted regularly in order to function, there is likely an underlying hardware or configuration issue. In this case, contact the manufacturer.

Will I lose data from active charging sessions during a restart?

An active charging session should always be ended before performing a restart. If a restart is carried out during an active charging session, the session may not be completed or billed correctly.

The charging station is still offline after the restart – what now?

First check the station's connection to the reev Platform under Monitoring -> Charging Infrastructure -> Charge Points. If there is a software-based lock or a SIM card issue, contact reev Support. If there is a hardware defect, contact the manufacturer.

Who is authorised to restart a charging station?

A soft reset via the user interface can generally be performed by authorised users. A hard reset via the main switch or circuit breaker should only be carried out by a qualified electrician.
